GENERAL FAQs

Please use our level finder to get an indication of what level you should enrol your child in.

In our beginner levels (level 1 beginner) we have a maximum of 3 students per teacher until they can swim confidently without assistance. For our level 1 Advanced the maximum of students per class is 4.

In our higher levels (from level 2 beginner and onwards), we pride ourselves in maintaining small numbers to ensure that all students get adequate attention, and the classes are capped at 5 students per class. Our level 5 class accommodates a maximum of 6 swimmers, and our mini-squad up to 12 swimmers.

As we operate in an outdoor heated swimming pool, we normally recommend that children are at least 4 years old when they commence with us.

We do accept younger children in exceptional circumstances. Please contact our office to discuss prior to enrolment.

Swimming lessons for Levels 1 to 5 are 30 minutes long.

Mini squad runs for 45 minutes.

When you arrive at the pool please check in with the supervisor and they will help you find your class.

On your first day aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early. This will allow you and your child to get used to the environment and possibly see your child’s teacher beforehand.

Please do not enter the pool until requested or stay in the water after the class has finished.

There are warm showers and change rooms available at the college.

Please bring bathers, sunscreen, towel and goggles. All equipment is provided.

For squad equipment, please see the relevant squad pages to find out what equipment is required for training.

Parents and guardians are advised to be present before, during and after their child’s swimming lessons, especially in the younger years. Please ensure that any children in your care are supervised at all times. Children in your care are your responsibility at all times other than during the swimming lesson itself. If you need to leave the pool for any reason, the on-deck supervisor must be informed. Swimmers must be picked up at the end of their lesson to avoid any distress.
Think about swimming lessons as a long-term process, rather than an event. To ensure continuous skill development, lessons need to be a regular part of your child’s weekly routine. As children learn, they progress at their own pace and master the skills appropriate for their age. By the time your child has reached level 5 in our program, they will be able to perform all four competitive strokes and relevant racing skills competently. They will also learn survival strokes and water safety techniques. At this point, children have developed long term skill retention and will have a skill for life.
An extra lesson each week accelerates learning, and our experience is that children who swim more frequently progress faster through each level. During the school holidays we offer our School Holiday Intensive Programs where your child can receive intensive swimming tuition each weekday.
Winter is a great time to keep your children active, healthy and building on their swimming skills. We find that swimmers who drop out of our program during winter often have difficulty picking up where they left off. Consistent year round practice is crucial to avoid regression – this is because their muscle memory and long term skills retention are not fully developed. Our outdoor pool, with a consistent warm temperature, makes lessons comfortable all year round.

The best person to talk to about your child’s progress is the supervisor. Our supervisors are always available to liaise between parents and teachers and answer any of your concerns. Please feel free to let them know of any special needs your child may have. Supervisors are easily recognisable with their Aquafanatics shirts.

Feedback is important and that’s why we aim to provide all our parents with a detailed update on their child’s progress at the end of each term. A certificate is delivered personally to each swimmer/parent by their instructor or an Aquafanatics supervisor, which outlines your child’s progress throughout the term.

We always aim to challenge children and continually make progress when possible. However, progress may not always be continuous. It can come in spurts and children will occasionally plateau in their learning. Sometimes, they may even appear to regress. It is not uncommon for some skills to take a while to master, particularly if they are learning a new or difficult skill.

Being patient and trusting the process is important, but if there are specific concerns, they can be addressed with the on-deck supervisor. It’s also important to remember that children are accomplishing something by maintaining their existing skills – many younger children will regress if lessons and regular practice stop for more than a couple of months.

We understand that everyone learns in their own ways and at their own speeds. Our trained instructors and supervisors pick up on skill differences very quickly and adjust teaching methods as needed. We’re constantly evaluating our students and are very flexible when it comes to working with each child. Our small classes especially allow our instructors to get to know and work with your child’s strengths and weakness.

Current swimmers are invited to join the appropriate squad when their instructor or coach assesses that they are ready and there are spots available in that squad.

New swimmers to Aquafanatics will need to be assessed to determine which squad is appropriate for them. Skill requirements for each squad can be found on the squad pages.

Learning to swim is an important step in a child’s life. Understandably some parents want to film or photograph their child’s progress. However, the presence of cameras can cause concern for some parents. In order to respect everyone’s privacy, parents wishing to film or photograph their child at the swim school are asked to consult with the supervisor, prior to doing so.
